VISA

Citizens of most European countries are eligible for a 30-day tourist visa, extendable for up to 90 days. Volunteers engaged in research and not undertaking paid employment may enter and stay in Sri Lanka on a tourist visa for up to 90 days. A 30-day visa is provided on arrival and can be extended for up to 90 days once in Sri Lanka. You should obtain your electronic travel authorization (ETA) online prior to travelling to Sri Lanka. Citizens of some countries may be eligible for a visit visa of up to 6 months directly from a Sri Lankan Embassy or High Commission.

Airport pickup

Often, visiting scientists and students are met at the airport. This can be arranged by mentioning it specifically in the questionnaire below.

Car rental

Cars can be rented with a driver, but other means of transport are generally preferred if you are not familiar with local driving in Sri Lanka.

Making your own way

Kalkudah is around 300km from the main city of Colombo. It can be accessed by public bus and train services. Please contact your host for detailed information.

• By car: Cars can be rented in Colombo. Please note that you would require an international driver permit endorsed in Sri Lanka prior to driving in Sri Lanka, and that it is highly preferable to use a local driver accustomed to the local driving.
• Local bus: You can reach Valachchenai via Batticaloa bound buses. Buses depart throughout the day, but the best option is to take a night bus from Colombo. These are faster and more comfortable regular daytime buses with AC, reclining seats and luggage storage. You can book seats online on busseat.lk or www.busticket.lk.
• Train: Valachchenai is accessible via trains bound for Batticaloa. Trains depart Colombo Fort station daily at 06:00 hrs and 19:00 hrs, and seats may be booked in advance.
• Airport pick up and pick up from train station or bus station in Valachchenai is provided by Blue Resources Trust.
