"I helped out with the coral conservation project in all aspects of the work such as laying transects, recording species and doing manta tows. I would also help fill dive tanks, and clean and organize the equipment, and even learnt the basics of driving a boat. I was taught data analysis and required to give presentations on relevant research papers. I also visited the fish market where we would talk to fishermen and document their catch. This allowed me to understand the issues of sustainability for local communities, and the political and social aspects of conservation as well as the complexities involved."
